Number the days — that's what makes them count.
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Reflection
The prayer is not to count the days, as if the point were an accurate tally, but to number them in the older sense — to weigh them, to treat them as limited and therefore precious. The request is for the awareness that the supply is finite, because that awareness changes how each one gets spent. And the purpose clause is telling: that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Numbering the days isn't meant to produce dread or urgency for its own sake — it's meant to produce wisdom. Knowing the days are counted is what makes a person spend them well. Sunday is the natural day to number them, and to bring the coming week under that longer view.
