Scripture Devotion
The searching eyes look for a heart to strengthen, not a fault to punish.
“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.”
Reflection
The image is of active searching — eyes running to and fro throughout the whole earth, not passively watching but scanning, looking for something. And what they're looking for is not fault to punish but a heart to strengthen: someone to shew himself strong in behalf of. The condition isn't perfection of performance but a heart perfect toward him — whole, undivided, turned in the right direction. Not flawless, but fully oriented. The searching eyes aren't hunting for the impressive or the accomplished; they're looking for the wholly-turned heart, to back it with strength. Midweek, that reframes who's watching, and why.
