The watchman wakes — but the LORD keeps the city.
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”
Reflection
Two images, one point. The builder labours; the watchman wakes. Both are doing real, necessary work — the verse doesn't say don't build or don't watch. It says something more piercing: the building and the watching, done without the LORD, come to nothing. In vain — the labour still happens, the watchman still stands his post through the night, but the outcome doesn't rest on his effort alone. This is the watchman's own verse, and it carries a humility the watch requires. To keep watch is good and right — but the keeping of the city was never finally in the watchman's hands. He wakes, he scans the dark, he sounds the alarm; and still it's the LORD who keeps the city. The vigilance is real; the trust underneath it is what keeps the vigilance from becoming vanity. Watch — and know who truly keeps the wall.
