The verb is set — deliberate, chosen, the way you'd set a compass or a course. Affection here isn't treated as something that just happens to you, a weather you're subject to; it's something you aim. And the aiming is the whole instruction: point it above, not merely at the earth. That's not a call to ignore the earthly things — the work, the bills, the day's real demands. It's a call about where the affection, the deep set of the heart, finally rests. The earthly things get handled better, not worse, when they're not also carrying the weight of your ultimate hope. Midweek, when the earthly presses hardest, is exactly when the setting of the affection higher does its quiet work of keeping the pressing things in proportion.
