Scripture Devotion

Guided with an eye — the leading of someone close enough to catch your glance.

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
Psalm 32:8 (KJV)

Reflection

Three verbs of guidance stack up here, and they get more intimate as they go: instruct, teach, guide. Instruction is information; teaching is formation; but the last one is the tender one — guide thee with mine eye. Not with a shove, not with a shouted command from a distance, but with a look. The guidance of a glance is the guidance of someone close enough to catch your eye. That's a particular kind of leading. It requires the one being guided to be watching the guide's face — attentive enough to catch the look. A Tuesday full of decisions is met not with a distant rulebook but with a nearness that guides by eye, for those close enough to keep looking up and catching it.

Motivational Quote

The place it feels impossible is often where the tide turns.

“When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.”
— Harriet Beecher Stowe

Application

Stowe — who moved a nation with a book — points to a specific moment: the one just before you'd quit, which is so often the one right before it turns. The tight place feels like the end because you can't see past it, but she insists it's frequently the hinge. Whatever's pressing hardest this week, her counsel is to hold on precisely there, at the point holding feels impossible.
