Scripture Devotion
The worry has somewhere to go — and the peace stands guard.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Reflection
"Be careful for nothing" is old English for "be anxious about nothing" — a tall order, until you see it comes with a method, not just a command. The anxiety is meant to be replaced, not merely suppressed: in everything, by prayer, the requests get handed over. The worry has somewhere to go. And the promise is precise about what it does: the peace keeps your hearts and minds — a garrison word, a peace that stands guard. Notice it passeth all understanding, meaning it doesn't wait for the circumstances to make sense first. It's not peace because you've reasoned your way calm; it's peace that posts itself over the heart even while the mind can't yet explain why. Midweek, that's the exchange on offer: the worry out, the guarding peace in.
