Peace, peace — doubled — for the mind that stays fixed.
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
Reflection
The Hebrew behind "perfect peace" is shalom shalom — peace, peace, the word said twice, a doubling that means completeness, peace at its fullest. And it's promised on a single condition stated plainly: whose mind is stayed on thee. Stayed — fixed, propped, leaning its full weight — not glancing occasionally but settled. The mind is restless by nature; it drifts to the worry, the unknown, the replay of the problem. This verse locates peace not in the absence of trouble but in the direction the mind is fixed. Stay it — deliberately, repeatedly, because it won't stay on its own — and the doubled peace follows. By Thursday, when the mind has wandered all week toward what presses, the instruction is simple and hard: fix it back, and be kept.
