Scripture Devotion
The qualification for the rest is simply being tired enough to need it.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Reflection
The invitation is aimed with precision at exactly the people who feel least able to accept it: the laboring and the heavy laden. Not the rested and capable — the worn. It's an odd mercy that the qualification for the rest offered is simply being tired enough to need it. The weariness isn't a disqualifier; it's the very address the invitation is sent to. And the promise is active: I will give you rest. Not "find rest if you can manage it," but a rest handed over, given. There's a difference between rest you have to construct and rest you receive — the first is one more task; the second is relief. At the end of a laboring week, the invitation stands open, addressed by name to the heavy laden: come, and be given rest.
