Scripture Devotion

Not a gap to close with cleverness — a difference of altitude.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8–9 (KJV)

Reflection

The verse draws a gap and then measures it. First the plain statement: my thoughts are not your thoughts. Then the scale: as high as the heavens are above the earth. That's not a small gap to be closed with more effort or cleverness — it's a difference of altitude, a whole order above. This is meant to be freeing more than humbling. If the ways are that much higher, then the things that don't make sense from down here aren't necessarily errors — they may simply be operating at an altitude you can't yet see from. Midweek, when a situation refuses to add up, the verse offers an alternative to forcing an explanation: the possibility that it makes perfect sense from higher up, and that not seeing it is exactly what you'd expect from the ground.

Motivational Quote

Man proposes, but God disposes.

“For man proposes, but God disposes.”
— Thomas à Kempis

Application

Thomas à Kempis names the quiet humility every plan needs: you make the proposal — the schedule, the intention, the careful arrangement — but the disposing, the final ordering of how it actually goes, belongs to God. It isn't a reason to stop planning; it's a reason to hold the plans with an open hand. Midweek, propose your work in earnest, and leave room for the disposing to improve on it.
