Scripture Devotion

There's a floor beneath the floor, and it is a pair of arms.

“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.”
Deuteronomy 33:27 (KJV)

Reflection

The image is of a fall with a floor that cannot be fallen past: underneath are the everlasting arms. Not arms that catch you only if you fall far enough, not a safety net with a bottom — arms that are always already underneath, no matter how far down the day has taken you. There is a floor beneath the floor, and it is a pair of arms, and they are everlasting. Pair that with the first clause — the eternal God is thy refuge — and you have both directions covered: a refuge to run into, and arms to hold you up when running isn't possible. On a Thursday when the week's weight has you feeling the descent, the verse doesn't promise you won't fall. It promises there's no falling past the arms. They're already underneath.

Motivational Quote

Grace brought me safe thus far — and grace will lead me home.

“'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.”
— John Newton

Application

John Newton — slave-ship captain turned pastor — wrote that line looking back over a life with no shortage of dangers, toils and snares. His reasoning runs in two directions at once: grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. The record of the road behind becomes the ground of trust for the road ahead. Late in the week, when what's still in front of you looks long, count the miles grace has already carried you. The same grace isn't finished.
