Scripture Devotion

A work you began, you might abandon. A work he began, he completes.

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
Philippians 1:6 (KJV)

Reflection

The confidence in this verse rests on a particular fact: the work was begun by someone other than you. He which hath begun a good work in you — it started as his initiative, not your resolution, which changes who's responsible for finishing it. A project you started, you might abandon; a work he began, he completes. And the promise is that he will perform it — carry it through, bring it to completion — all the way until the day of Jesus Christ. Not until you lose momentum, not until it gets hard, but to the end. There's rest in that for a Friday, especially one where your own progress feels stalled: the good work in you isn't yours to finish by willpower. It's his to complete by faithfulness, and he does not leave his work undone.

Motivational Quote

Humility is perfect quietness of heart.

“Humility is perfect quietness of heart.”
— Andrew Murray

Application

Andrew Murray defines humility not as thinking poorly of yourself but as a settled heart — perfect quietness. The proud heart is a noisy one: defending, comparing, keeping score of what it's owed. Humility lets all of that go quiet, because it has stopped needing to prove anything. At the end of a working week, when the urge is to tally the credit and the slights, Murray's word is a stilling one. Quiet the heart; your reputation was never what held things together.
