Scripture Devotion

A man without self-rule is a city with the walls down — anything walks in.

“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”
Proverbs 25:28 (KJV)

Reflection

Ancient cities had one defense that mattered: the wall. Lose it and it didn't matter how strong the army was — anything could walk in at any hour. Proverbs says the man with no rule over his own spirit is that city. Not wicked, not weak — just unwalled. Meanwhile Paul walks Timothy through the ordered household of God, where honor runs on lines someone keeps. The watchman's first wall is the one around his own spirit. Check yours for breaches before the day tests them.

Motivational Quote

Moreover, there is a victory and defeat—the first and best of victories, the lowest and worst of defeats—which each man gains or sustains at the hands, not of another, but of himself; this shows that there is a war against ourselves going on within every one of us.

“Moreover, there is a victory and defeat—the first and best of victories, the lowest and worst of defeats—which each man gains or sustains at the hands, not of another, but of himself; this shows that there is a war against ourselves going on within every one of us.”
— Plato, Laws (Book I)

Application

Twenty-four centuries ago Plato's Laws ranks every victory a man can win and puts self-conquest at the top — above armies, above rivals. Proverbs had said it first: the wall you hold against your own temper, appetite, and impulse is the one every other defense stands behind. Win that battle before breakfast and the day's other fights shrink.
