Scripture Devotion

Proverbs ends with two voices: humility that knows its size, and a lamp that doesn't go out.

“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”
Proverbs 30:5 (KJV)

Reflection

The book of Proverbs closes today with its two guest speakers. Agur opens by confessing he's the least wise man in the room — and then says the wisest thing in it: every word of God is pure, a shield to those who trust it. Then comes the famous portrait of the woman whose candle goeth not out by night. Humility and vigilance — thirty-one chapters of wisdom end on exactly those two notes. Carry both into the weekend: small enough to be taught, awake enough to keep the lamp lit.

Motivational Quote

I felt my heart strangely warmed.

“I felt my heart strangely warmed.”
— John Wesley

Application

Wesley wrote those six words the night everything changed — a failed missionary at a meeting he attended reluctantly, on a street called Aldersgate. The warming wasn't the end of the story; it was the spark. Paul's charge to Timothy is the rest of it: stir up the gift of God, fan the flame — for God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. The lamp in Proverbs 31 that goeth not out by night isn't lucky. Somebody tends it. Tend yours this weekend.
