Scripture Devotion

The end of a thing beats the beginning — but only the patient get to see it.

“Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”
Ecclesiastes 7:8 (KJV)

Reflection

Beginnings are cheap — announcements, ribbon-cuttings, first chapters. The Teacher says the end is better, and then names the toll for getting there: patience of spirit over pride of spirit. Paul's letter to Titus opens the same way — not with vision statements but with setting things in order in Crete, slowly, household by household. The proud spirit needs the win now. The patient spirit builds the thing that's still standing in ten years. Choose which spirit runs today.

Motivational Quote

No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig.

“No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig.”
— Epictetus

Application

Epictetus finishes the thought like a farmer: let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen. That's the Teacher's arithmetic in a vineyard — the end is better than the beginning, but there is no shortcut through the middle. The proud spirit demands the fig today; the patient spirit tends the vine. Put one patient brick on the wall this morning and let the season do its work.
