Scripture Devotion

After the vapor, the Song — the Bible's answer to what does last.

“He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.”
Song of Solomon 2:4 (KJV)

Reflection

The reading plan's timing preaches by itself: the book after "all is vanity" is a love song. And today's one-chapter letter, Philemon, is love doing hard work — Paul sending a runaway slave home as a brother, paying the debt himself: put that on mine account. Love as banner and love as invoice, the same morning. On a day the culture dresses up as everything dark, the Anchor flies a different flag over the house.

Motivational Quote

O Love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee.

“O Love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee.”
— George Matheson

Application

Matheson wrote that hymn in five minutes on a night of what he called 'the most severe mental suffering,' blind since his youth — he said it felt dictated to him. It's the Song's banner made singable: a love that holds on when everything else lets go. Rest under it this weekend; then do one Philemon-sized act — pay a small debt that isn't yours, for someone who can't.
