Kharg Island book cover — The Aegis Directive, Book Seven, by Elias Maren

The war is over.

The strait has reopened.

The mountain has fallen.

And somewhere behind the paperwork of nine international institutions, a system no one has ever named continues to decide what counts as lawful.

Caleb Vale is sixty-one years old. He carries four hundred and six civilian names from the mountain strike that ended a war no one wanted. He has sworn there will not be another.

But when an Iranian records officer discovers a timestamp that cannot be true, and three operators probe the perimeter of a Montana compound three nights later, Caleb and his wife Elena understand that the war the Protocol was built to prevent has not ended. It has become invisible.

At the Flathead Valley ranch, three American Akitas stand guard over a vulnerable child. Across six continents, trained handlers wait with eight more dogs from the same bloodline.

The Seven Watches are now operational.

The watchman does not stop the thing. The watchman sees it, and says so, and lives with having said it.

Maintain the Watch.

Chapter One · The Empty Berth

Read the opening

Raiko was already standing.

Caleb Vale woke to the shape of the dog in the bedroom doorway. The Akita had not barked. He had not growled. He had simply risen from his position in the hallway and placed himself between the room where Caleb and Elena slept and whatever had changed in the house.

Caleb lay still.

He listened.

The furnace moved air through the vents. The clock beside the bed read four seventeen. Beyond the window, the Montana night held the valley the way it always did at this hour — the mountains dark against a slightly darker sky.

Then he heard what Raiko had already heard.

A single footfall. Too light for a man of ordinary carriage. Too deliberate for an animal.

Someone was on the north perimeter.

Seven Watches

The Premise

The war is over.

The Strait has reopened.

The mountain has fallen.

The island is held.

And somewhere behind the paperwork of nine international institutions, a system that no one has ever named continues to decide what counts as lawful.

For twenty years, the Aegis Directive series has followed Caleb Archer Vale and his wife Elena from the arid approaches of the Persian Gulf to the orbital corridors above the Earth. Six books. Six operations. One doctrine — that the watchman does not stop the thing; the watchman sees it, and says so, and lives with having said it.

Now the war the Protocol was built to prevent has been fought, and won, and buried.

But the architecture that made the war possible is still standing.

Seven Watches is the next generation of the Aegis Directive. Seven books. Seven theaters. One architectural investigation that reaches from the hospital generators of Kharg Island to the reserve designation instruments of Geneva, from the Tehran records office of a clerk who noticed a timestamp that should not exist to the Flathead Valley compound where three American Akitas stand guard over a vulnerable child.

The enemy is no longer a man.

The enemy is the system that allows unattributed authority to be mistaken for lawful authority.

The watch continues.

Operating Principles

The Watchman Protocol

The Vale household charter, consolidated at Flathead Valley, Montana, following the Kharg Island investigation. Nine principles. One foundational doctrine. One guardian at the beginning.

  1. I. No Watch may create the authority it claims to exercise.
  2. II. Evidence must be strong enough for the action proposed.
  3. III. Uncertainty is not permission to escalate.
  4. IV. Repetition is not independent corroboration.
  5. V. The human consequence is part of the evidence.
  6. VI. No Watch may certify its own evidence for another Watch.
  7. VII. No administrative correction may ignore lawful civilian dependencies.
  8. VIII. No investigation may impose unjustified danger on people to recover evidence.
  9. IX. Every consequential decision must have an attributable, accountable authority.

THE STRONGEST GUARDIAN KNOWS WHEN TO BE GENTLE.

Flathead Valley, Montana

The Akita Legacy

Three American Akitas stand with the Vale household at Flathead Valley.

  • Raiko — the steady guardian.
  • Bella — Gabriel's companion.
  • Kuma — the youngest, still learning.

All descended, in the family's canon, from Samson — the first guardian, 120 pounds of patience and strength, remembered on the wall of every room where the family gathers. Elena Vale's canine program will eventually place two Akitas with each of the Seven Watches, trained first at Montana in English and Japanese commands, then stationed with their handlers across six continents. The dogs are not weapons. They are partners whose cooperation must be earned, whose welfare is paramount, and whose foundational doctrine is engraved on a brass plaque beneath Samson's photograph:

THE STRONGEST GUARDIAN KNOWS WHEN TO BE GENTLE.

The Berlin Engagement

November 11, 2026

Why Veterans Day

The Aegis Directive honors the people who serve and the costs they carry.

The post-Kharg Watchman Protocol asks a question that military service has always asked:

What is the lawful authority behind the orders you follow — and who, finally, is accountable for what those orders produce?

The series does not glorify war. It does not rationalize collateral damage. It carries the weight of civilian casualties as a permanent moral debt that no operation can discharge.

Caleb Vale is sixty-one years old. He carries four hundred and six names. He has decided that his final watch will not be measured by what he destroys, but by what he preserves — the ordinary lives of people whose names no government will ever list on a strategic plan.

That is why we announce the series on November 11.

Not as a celebration of what war accomplishes.

As a commitment to what the watchman owes the people the watchman serves.

For the four hundred and six.
